SOS analysis gives the quickest, most exact and more reliable picture of what is happening within your motor. The analyses provide the opportunity to test all of the fluids, including the motor oil, transmission and drive line oils, hydraulics oils and coolant. The analysis is an important step towards increased productivity, fewer major repairs, less interruption to operations and lower running costs.
CAT engines are built to provide the highest possible performance levels throughout its lifetime. Maintenance is essential for this and an SOS analysis is an important first step. We help you set up a programme that suits your conditions. We take into account your engine model, whether it is a CAT engine or another manufacturer, the type of work it is carrying out and your current maintenance system.
The perfect fault finding method
Satisfactory fluid maintenance is necessary if the engine is to maintain top performance. The SOS analysis has been constructed to identify problems at an early stage, before they lead to reduced performance, major repairs or, in the worst case, unforeseen interruption to operations or catastrophic failure. Discovering potential problems early is the very key to reduced downtime and high productivity. Using advanced analysis technology and experienced technicians, the SOS analysis can find out whether the lubricating oil and coolant are doing their jobs and are providing satisfactory protection to the engine.

SOS Oil Analysis Regular oil analysis is a good and reasonable insurance against expensive repairs and interrupted operations. Spending a couple of minutes on an oil sample that you send to us can save you huge amounts on your maintenance. |

Status reports warn you about problems
When SOS Oil Services receives your test sample, we analyse your oil and send you a status report. The primary task is to determine the state of the engine, rather than the state of the oil. The test tells you about any abnormal wear and unforeseen problems - at an early point in time! The report will also give advice about necessary adjustments that could prevent major damage. Additional tests can be carried out as required.
Because irregularities are discovered before they cause serious damage, you can achieve great savings in maintenance of your engine. You can also prolong its lifetime through correct oil changes and filter replacement. You can find a brief description of standard oil analyses in the SOS programme below.

Wear analysis shows the degree of wear by finding and identifying the amount of metallic particles in the oil. An increase of number of particles in the oil from test to test is just as important as the quantity of particles in the oil. This is the reason for it being necessary to take oil samples at regular intervals in order to form a reliable picture the development of wear in each individual lubricated system.
Purity oil analysis uses the particle counts in lubricating oils, except the engine oils. The particle count finds both metal particles that are caused by wear and any impurities that have entered the system from outside the engine. Information from this test, together with the wear analysis, allows a comprehensive evaluation of the hydraulics system and drive line systems. The combination can identify potential problems that the wear analysis alone cannot.
Oil pollution analysis uses spectrometric analysis to determine the amount of silicon in the samples from the lubricated systems. The presence of silicon indicates that impurities are entering the systems. Additional tests find any pollution from fuel, water and glycol (coolant).
Oil state analysis shows the size of reduction in viscosity of the oil. The instrument that is used compares the properties of the oil against new oil, using infrared analysis. This test allows technicians to decide how much of the oil has decomposed and if it will retain its specified properties until the next oil change.
Who can benefit from oil analyses?
Everyone who uses lubricated engines, machinery and hydraulic systems will benefit from oil analyses. Our analyses are useful tools in preventive maintenance, whatever the make and model of the equipment.

SOS Coolant analysis
Problems with coolant or the cooling system contribute to more than 50% of all engine failures. These failures may be caused by insufficient maintenance of the cooling system, incorrect mixtures, long and hard loads without cooling procedures, short circuits or faults in the block heater. |
 |
|
Such problems will finally affect the properties of the engine oil, cause oil oxidisation or decomposition of the oil’s anti-additives. Problems with the cooling system can also reduce the lifetime of the transmission and hydraulics components that are cooled by the engine’s cooling system through heat exchangers. SOS coolant analysis is a two-part programme that does more than just investigate the state of the coolant. It investigates the cooling system’s general state and can identify problems caused by maintenance or methods of use. |
