Caterpillar started its business in the US in the 1920s, and in 1925 the Caterpillar Tractor Company was registered as a company. The first company-manufactured diesel engines for mobile applications were launched in 1931. Only 2 years later, Caterpillar overtook its competitors to become the highest volume domestic manufacturer of diesel engines, measured in horsepower.
The first diesel engines from Caterpillar, developed for marine use, were launched in 1937, and two years later followed the first complete generator units. After the war, in 1947, Caterpillar's first natural gas engine was developed and 1955 saw the appearance of Caterpillar’s first turbocharged diesel engine.
Caterpillar’s marine engines are today used in most types of vessel for propulsion, auxiliary engines and emergency generator sets. We also supply motors for operating fire pumps and cranes on board ships.
